BYD's to Rack up CNY 3.6 Mn in Net Profit for the First Three Quarters of 2020

The Xi'an based auto-maker issued an announcement on the revision of the performance forecast for the first three quarters of 2020 on October 12th. The report showed that BYD's net profit in the first three quarters rose from CNY 2.8-3 billion to CNY 3.4-3.6 billion, an increase of 77.86%-90.56%.  It also mentioned that the auto sector’s business growth is getting back on track, especially with the rapid sales growth of new energy vehicles.  Among them, BYD's new flagship model, 'Han,' has gotten very popular in the domestic high-end new energy vehicle market, with rising sales and orders. The model has acted as a catalyst for the company's new energy passenger vehicle business.  According to BYD's recent sales report, total car sales in September were 42,200, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%. Among them, the total sales of new energy vehicles were 19,900, a year-on-year increase of 45.3% and a month-on-month increase of 30.1%. The sales of traditional combustion engine vehicles were 22,300, a year-on-year decrease of 17.6% and a month-on-month increase of 3.7%. In September, the sales of Han reached 5,612, a 40.3% increase from the previous month, and the sales of the new Tang DM models exceeded 3,000, a 99% increase compared with last month. Also, BYD's electronic mobile phone components and assembly business segment have played their parts in the rising profits. The company said that the share of significant customers has continued to increase. It has successfully made contracts with new global leading manufacturers of mobile phones and other smart products. The shipments of glass ceramics and new intelligent products have swelled, which has promoted the further expansion of business scale.

BYD to Electrify Finland's Public Transport

BYD announced on September 22 that it had signed an order for 106 purely electric buses with Nobina, the largest public transportation operator in the Nordic region, now entering the Finnish market. This is another major breakthrough in BYD's European expansion after entering Germany. All vehicles are expected to be delivered in the summer of 2021, of which 64 will be used in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and 42 will be delivered to Turku, a coastal city in southwestern Finland.  According to BYD, the company has sold over 400 electric buses in 20 cities in Scandinavia.  "We at Nobina Finland are excited to commence BYD eBus operations in the Turku area next year," said Petri Auno, MD of Nobina. "A large part of the bus fleet in the Turku region will shift to the benefits of eMobility and towards a more environmentally friendly future. Our route network is extensive, so a large number of passengers stand to benefit from the new vehicles." BYD Europe Managing Director, Isbrand Ho, added, "We’re very pleased that our relationship with Nobina continues to go from strength to strength, and we’re especially pleased that Nobina is the first PTO to select our new 15-meter model." "The Nordic region leads the rest of Europe in the adoption of electrification," he said, "providing evidence that electric mobility delivers tangible operational benefits for Public Transport Operators, alongside safe, quiet and comfortable local journeys for passengers. With our extensive experience in battery technology and energy management, we will continue to deliver total eMobility solutions for bus operators."

BYD Launches Mobile Charging Service

To solve the problem that every EV-maker and buyer faces, BYD has recently launched a mobile charging service. If a vehicle is about to run out of battery and needs emergency charging, the owner can call the customer service and a mobile charging vehicle will arrive within 60 minutes. The service is not available in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Qinghai, and Gansu for now. This is a cooperation between BYD and a third-party AXA (Chinese: 安盛救援). After the official request, the mobile charging vehicle will carry the charging pile to the vehicle location designated by the owner. After the mobile charging vehicle arrives, there will be an official power transmission officer to charge the car on site. After the battery is fully charged the vehicle owner and the service provider will settle the bill by themselves. The customer service staff of the mobile charging service said that the service charges CNY 295 per kWh nationwide, which is about CNY 30 per kWh. There is no charge for the cancellation of the order within 10 minutes after departure. Taking BYD Han EV as an example, its battery energy is 76.9kWh, which means it takes about CNY 2268 to fully charge a Han EV from 0-100 via the new BYD mobile charging service. According to 'auto-time' the fee of charging stations in Beijing ranges from CNY 1/kWh to CNY 2/kWh. According to the highest price, it takes about CNY 154 to fully charge the same Han EV model from 0-100. It can be seen that, although the mobile charging service is very convenient, it is quite expensive.

Huawei Makes Chip Deal with BYD

Huawei’s semiconductor arm HiSilicon has signed a cooperation agreement with BYD, local tech portal 36Kr reported (in Chinese) on June 15. The chipmaker is exploring new applications: the Kirin 710A will become its first System-on-a-Chip (SoC) to power digital cockpits. Xu Zhijun, the rotating chairman of Huawei, has also announced plans to build a smart cockpit platform, based on a combination of Kirin chips and the firm’s newly-developed operating system, Harmony. There is something else relevant about the Shenzhen corporation's attempts in the automotive field: as the company's founder Ren Zhengfei pointed out (in Chinese) in a document released last year, “Huawei does not manufacture cars, but focuses on the ICT industry to become an incremental ICT component supplier for automobiles, helping car makers.” Apart from direct cooperation with HiSilicon, BYD has cooperated with Huawei before. For instance, BYD’s new model Han has adopted Huawei's 5G module MH5000. The two have also cooperated on products such as mobile phone NFC car keys and HiCar mobile phone screen projection solutions. Besides, BYD is one of the 18 car companies in Huawei’s ‘5G Automotive Ecosystem.’ For Huawei, with the opportunities around vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and smart cockpits, the contract with BYD will increase its share in the semiconductor market. Also, since the United States government launched stricter bans on Chinese technology companies, many Chinese car companies have been exploring domestically produced chips as possible alternatives. If this deal happens, BYD will become a pioneer among auto companies massively using locally developed microelectronic devices. The agreement hasn't been officially confirmed by the two companies.
