On May 1, NIO posted on its official Weibo the results of an investigation into the spontaneous combustion of an ES8 in a maintenance center in Xi 'an: the chassis of the ES8 had suffered a serious impact before being sent for repair, resulting in a large area of deformation of the left rear shell and cooling plate of the power battery package.

The internal structure of the battery pack was compressed for a period of time and then formed a short circuit, which eventually triggered the fire.

On April 22 this year, a section of the video of NIO ES8 in a certain place of Xi 'an was exposed on the Internet, which aroused wide attention from car owners and electric car enthusiasts.

According to NIO, the vehicle came to Xi 'an cooperation service outlets on April 20 for front windshield replacement and front bumper repair. Because the repair project does not involve the chassis, the car did not test the chassis.

After the maintenance service was completed on 21st, the vehicles were parked in the parking lot of the service outlets. At about 13:41 on April 22, smoke started to appear in vehicles. 13:48 the vehicle begins to show signs of fire.

Description of the accident in Xi 'an on April 22

On April 20, 2019, an ES8 was delivered to the NIO xi 'an cooperative service outlet for front windshield replacement and front bumper repair.

As the above repair items do not involve the chassis, the car did not chassis testing. After the maintenance service was completed on 21st, the vehicles were parked in the parking lot of the service outlets. At about 13:41 on April 22, smoke started to appear in vehicles. 13:48 the vehicle has an open fire.

The fire brigade rushed to the scene to put out the fire after receiving the alarm. There was no explosion, no casualties or other damage to facilities. NIO immediately reported the accident to the competent department and organized technical experts to the scene for investigation.

Preliminary conclusions are drawn through investigation and data analysis:

The chassis of the vehicle had suffered a serious impact before repair, leading to a large area of deformation of the left rear shell and cooling plate of the power battery pack. The internal structure of the battery pack was compressed for a period of time and then formed a short circuit, which eventually triggered the fire.
