Among the 39 facial recognition algorithms in the world, five Chinese AI companies swap the top five places this year. FRVT has attracted many world-known AI developers including the most established companies such as Gemalto from the Netherland, Morpho from France and Vocord from Russia.
Nov 16, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the US Department of Commerce published their latest report of Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRIT), Yitu Technology(依图科技)honored for its consecutive third-time throne by achieving a north of 99% accuracy rate, subjected to the false match rate of ten-million, representing the world best level of facial recognition.
What does the accuracy mean? It means that the machine with Yitu’s algorithms is able to recognize each person from ten million people while the human brain could only manage 100 with some faults.
The reports issued by FRVT have always been considered as the golden benchmark in the field of security in practice and serve as the official guideline for U.S. government purchases. The FRVT is aimed at measuring the performance of automated face recognition technologies applied to a wide range of civil, law enforcement and homeland security applications, including verification of visa images, de-duplication of passports, recognition across photojournalism images, and identification of child exploitation victims, according to the NIST website.
The company flaunts that comparing several months ago, Yitu has now elevated its recognition performance under the VISA scenario, beating its competitors brutally.
Among the 39 facial recognition algorithms in the world, five Chinese AI companies swap the top five places this year. FRVT has attracted many world-known AI developers including the most established companies such as Gemalto from the Netherland, Morpho from France and Vocord from Russia.
It should be noticed that it is the first time three shining Chinese unicorn companies focusing on facial recognition are competing in the same arena, including Sensetime(商汤科技), Megvii(旷视科技), and Yitu.
As the test had barred the False Match Rate(FMR) up from ten-thousand-grade to ten-million-grade this year, the“student” might face tougher tests in the future.
The company has proved the real capabilities of its algorithms in real-life applications in the test but also in true life. Police in Guiyang, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province, are already deploying a facial recognition system that can catch fugitives and suspects who have managed to hide their identities for years. Yitu's facial recognition technologies are adopted by China Merchants Bank to enable face-authenticated cash withdrawals at ATMs in several cities already, according to PRNewswire.
Nov 23, Yitu and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently to drive AI capabilities in Singapore and boost industry-relevant AI education and research.
The precision of facial recognition can bring users better experience when using their products under specific circumstances, reported by Enterprise Innovation.
The difference between algorithms are not disappearing, the gap, however, is widening day after day.
