New EV brand SERES’s road to the top will be bumpy, given the competitive market landscape

AITO M5, a flagship SUV model under the Chinese EV brand SERES, performed brilliantly in the first month of delivery, but to achieve the annual sales target of 300,000, it has a long way to go.
AITO M5 medium-sized SUV, jointly built by Huawei and SERES, is the first car equipped with Huawei’s Harmony OS (operating system) and uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged gas engine which works as a generator to supply extra electricity.
The pre-sale of AITO M5 started in December 2021 and SERES has delivered more than 3,000 vehicles in March 2022, media reported.
On April 7, Chongqing-based car manufacturer Sokon Group, a partner of Huawei’s carmaking project, released their production and sale briefing, including the production and sales of SERES, a subsidiary of Chongqing Sokon Industry Group.
The production and sale briefing shows that the production and sales volume of SERES in March was 3,465 and 3,160 respectively, and the cumulative production and sales in the first quarter was 6,808 and 5,044 respectively.
At an internal meeting in January, SERES put out the slogan "AITO M5 Production Guarantee for 10,000 New Cars in the First Quarter." Given the result in the first quarter, the production target set at that time has not been met, Jiemian News reported.
Compared to Li Auto’s Li One model, whose sales reached 11,000 in March, and Voyah Free, whose highest monthly delivery is more than 3,000, AITO does not have obvious advantages, according to Jiemian.
This year, AITO M5 will also launch a pure electric version and a new medium- and large-sized SUV, Jiemian claims. Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Technologies Consumer Business Group, previously revealed that the AITO will challenge the sales target of 300,000 vehicles in 2022.
