According to Reuters on September 9, Chinese luxury automaker Hongqi (红旗) announced plans to introduce 15 electric and hybrid vehicle models in Europe by 2028, covering 25 countries and regions. At the Munich IAA Mobility Show, Hongqi also unveiled its EHS5, a new compact all-electric SUV.
Giles Taylor, Hongqi's design director, said the EHS5 offers a 550 km (342 miles) range and supports fast charging from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes. Compared with the larger EHS9 model, the EHS5 is sportier, more youthful, and designed for urban and suburban families as well as personal drivers. Pricing and the exact launch date have not yet been announced.
Hongqi is joining an increasing number of Chinese automakers, including BYD, Chery, and Changan, in accelerating expansion into European EV markets amid intensifying competition in China.
Earlier this year, Leapmotor (零跑汽车) announced a partnership with Hongqi to provide its EV platform for an upcoming Hongqi electric vehicle. Leapmotor CEO Zhu Jiangming confirmed during the Munich IAA Show that production of this co-developed model is expected to begin in Q4 2026.
