Feb 24, PMD Technologies AG, a developer of CMOS semiconductor 3D time-of-flight (ToF) components, and BYTON (拜腾), a China’s premium electric vehicle manufacturer, announced that PMD’s 3D ToF sensors will be used for the in-car gesture control camera system operating the 48-inch Shared Experience Display (SED) in BYTON's M-Byte SUV.

BYTON launched its first production model SUV M-Byte in CES 2019. Compared with the previous concept car, the mass production ready model, arguably, has fewer fancy features(see more in this article).

BYTON is going to unveil the model in the middle of 2019, the vehicle's presale will start at the same time with a predicted price range between CNY 300,000 (USD 44,843.05) and CNY 400,000 (USD 59,790.73). The production of this mid-sized electric vehicle will start in late 2019 and will be debuted in America in 2020, according to Sina.

Harmony Auto’s Chairman FENG Changge (冯长革), Tencent’s Chairman Pony Ma (马化腾), and Foxconn’s Chairman Terry Guo (郭台铭) set up a joint venture to develop EV. And the first project called Future Mobility Corporation (FMC) registered in Hongkong in March 2016. FMC launched the brand named as BYTON in September 2017. BYTON caught everyone's eye with its M-Concept at CES Las Vegas in January 2018 and completed its series- B funding of USD 500 million in June 2018. (see more in this article).

China’s new energy vehicle makers are rushing towards the goal of mass production. All three of these: Nio (蔚来), WM Motor (威马汽车) and Xpeng Motors (小鹏汽车) have already started mass production since 2018. They have some goals: Nio surpassed their original expectations, WM Motor failed to fulfill its target, Xpeng only started around two months ago. Now Byton is finally getting one step closer to the battlefield: mass production and delivery. In the end, only time will tell us who will win this war.

The screen-filled M-Byte features its digital, modern software and hardware design. BYTON Life Cloud Platform connects a driver's or passenger’s apps, data, and devices, allowing them to take full advantage of their travel time whether for work or entertainment. BYTON Intuitive Access uses a facial recognition camera to recognize the driver or passenger to unlock the door. Byton is well-known for its big SED, but the practicability and reliability is still a mystery and waiting to be tested, not by a single person or experiencer, but the actual users in the future.
