On January 17, 2025, the Brazilian government officially announced that Nigeria has become a partner country of the BRICS group. As the BRICS rotating chair for 2025, Brazil highlighted in its statement that Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and one of the continent’s most significant economies. Nigeria shares common interests with other BRICS countries and is actively committed to strengthening cooperation with the "Global South" and reforming global governance.

With Nigeria’s inclusion, the number of BRICS partner countries has increased to nine, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. This expansion demonstrates BRICS' dedication to enhancing cooperation with developing countries and increasing its influence in global economic and political affairs. The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that becoming a BRICS partner will contribute to achieving inclusive growth and regional integration goals, aligning with Nigeria’s strategic autonomy. Nigeria aims to engage in constructive cooperation with BRICS countries, drive innovation, and promote cultural exchanges.

Nigeria’s new status as a BRICS partner has profound implications for its domestic economy and international relations. For local businesses, this partnership provides greater opportunities for trade and investment with BRICS nations, fostering economic growth and diversification. Specifically, for Chinese enterprises, Nigeria’s partner status will strengthen collaboration in infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing sectors, aligning with China's Belt and Road Initiative and promoting mutual development. Furthermore, Nigeria’s inclusion reflects BRICS’ commitment to amplifying the voice of the "Global South," contributing to a more balanced and fair global order.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended a warm welcome and congratulations on Nigeria’s inclusion, stating that this move further enhances BRICS’ representation, influence, and appeal. China expressed its willingness to work alongside other BRICS members and partner countries to deepen pragmatic cooperation across various fields, promote high-quality "Big BRICS Cooperation," and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Previously, in September 2024, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu paid a state visit to China and attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). During the visit, the heads of state of China and Nigeria announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, signing agreements covering cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative, human resource development, and nuclear energy.
