DAKAR, Dec 22 — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 22 in Tanaf, southern Senegal, for the upgrading of a section of the Dakar–Bissau road corridor constructed by a Chinese company. Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye attended the ceremony and laid the foundation stone for the project.
The project spans 26.4 kilometres, starting in Tanaf and extending to the border area between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. The works include roadbed and pavement rehabilitation, drainage system upgrades, and improvements to traffic safety facilities.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Faye said the upgraded road will significantly facilitate travel for Senegalese citizens and further promote cross-border movement between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. He noted that economic and trade exchanges along this transport corridor are highly active, and that improved road conditions will provide strong support for the efficient circulation of goods.
The project is being undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (中国港湾工程有限责任公司). Sun Haijun, deputy general manager of the company’s West Africa regional office, said the project represents another tangible outcome of infrastructure cooperation between China and Senegal, injecting momentum into Senegal’s economic and social development.
