DeepSeek V4 Flash has taken the No. 1 position in OpenRouter’s latest weekly model-call ranking following the rollout of its 0731 update, while DeepSeek V4 Pro also remained among the platform’s leading models. OpenRouter’s ranking is not a measure of all global AI use. It excludes direct API calls, private deployments and traffic through other cloud platforms. But it captures an important part of the market: developers actively choosing among multiple model providers for real applications. In that setting, a top ranking is not simply a benchmark win. It is evidence that a model is being selected for deployment.

The timing matters. DeepSeek V4 Flash’s latest version is aimed at coding and agent workloads, supporting a one-million-token context window, reasoning and non-reasoning modes, tool calling and JSON output. These features matter most in applications that make repeated calls—planning, coding, tool use, revision and verification—rather than in a single-turn chatbot exchange.

Price is central to the appeal. DeepSeek lists V4 Flash at USD 0.14 per million uncached input tokens and USD 0.28 per million output tokens. V4 Pro is priced at USD 0.435 per million uncached input tokens and USD 0.87 per million output tokens. For developers building high-volume coding assistants, customer-service systems or AI agents, those rates can determine whether a feature is commercially viable at scale.

This does not mean DeepSeek is the best option for every task. Large enterprises may continue to favor OpenAI, Anthropic or Google for their strongest models, enterprise support, security controls, regional infrastructure and compliance arrangements. But the market is becoming more task-specific. A company can reserve a premium model for its hardest requests while routing routine coding, extraction, summarization and agent steps to a cheaper system.

That is where DeepSeek’s rise matters. A lower-cost model does not need to lead every benchmark to reshape the market. It only needs to reach a capability level that is good enough for a large share of daily production work. For years, US AI labs largely set both the technical frontier and the price expectations for advanced models. Developers accepted premium rates because alternatives often came with a visible capability trade-off. The growing use of DeepSeek and other Chinese models suggests that trade-off is weakening. Competition is shifting from a simple question of which model is smartest to a more commercial one: how much useful work can each dollar of inference buy?

For Chinese companies going global, this is a different kind of export story. DeepSeek is not primarily selling hardware or traditional enterprise software overseas. It is becoming infrastructure that foreign developers use to build products. OpenRouter’s weekly chart will change, and one ranking does not settle the global AI race.
