Haier Smart Home(海尔智家)broke ground on a washing machine factory in Thailand’s Rayong Province on October 26. The project has a planned total annual capacity of 3 million units, with US$150 million allocated to a first phase designed for 1 million units a year. Haier describes it as its largest overseas intelligent washing machine factory.

Located in the WHA ESIE 5 Industrial Estate, the site covers approximately 326 mu, or 54 acres. It is intended to combine research and development, manufacturing and sales, with local production of premium MultiWash and X-series washing machines. The company expects the completed project to create more than 1,000 local jobs.
The factory would fill a gap in Haier’s washing machine manufacturing footprint in Thailand. According to the company, premium products in the market have relied heavily on imports, resulting in longer supply cycles. Local production is intended to improve responsiveness to demand while supporting sales in Thailand, other ASEAN markets and global destinations.
Haier also plans to coordinate the site with its existing worldwide laundry manufacturing network. That could provide more flexibility in allocating production and orders, but the eventual balance between domestic sales and exports will depend on demand, manufacturing costs and the requirements of destination markets.
The project’s figures describe different stages and scopes. US$150 million is the planned first-phase investment, rather than confirmed spending on the entire development. Similarly, 3 million units represents the full project’s planned annual capacity; it is not current output. Groundbreaking does not establish that production equipment has been installed or that commercial manufacturing has begun.
For Chinese appliance companies expanding internationally, the project illustrates how local manufacturing can support both market development and regional supply. The operational test comes after construction: qualifying suppliers, recruiting and training workers, maintaining product quality and building utilization.
Haier’s next milestones will be completion of the first phase, production commissioning and customer deliveries. The commercial value of the investment will depend on whether those capabilities translate into competitive costs, reliable supply and sustained demand for the products made in Rayong.
