Sungrow(阳光电源)said on October 27 that it would supply battery storage technology for the 150MW/300MWh expansion of ENGIE’s(恩吉集团)Hazelwood project in Victoria, Australia. Commercial operation is targeted for 2028.

The second stage will use Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 battery systems, power conversion equipment and EMS3000 controller. Sungrow Australia will serve as technology provider, while Spanish contractor Elecnor will undertake balance-of-plant and associated infrastructure works.

ENGIE announced financial close on October 16, saying key contracts had been executed and construction would begin later this year. The expansion will join an existing 150MW/150MWh battery operating since 2023, bringing the site’s combined capacity to 300MW/450MWh.

Located at the former Hazelwood coal-fired power station, the development will reuse existing infrastructure. ENGIE said the additional storage would help capture lower-cost daytime solar generation for dispatch during higher evening demand.

Sungrow said the expansion would incorporate grid-forming technology to support voltage and frequency stability as renewable generation increases. This places grid-support controls alongside battery equipment within its supply scope.

For Sungrow’s overseas business, the project provides another utility-scale reference in Australia. Financial close and supplier selection establish the delivery framework; construction, commissioning and demonstrated operating performance remain the next milestones.
