BYD(比亚迪)said its share of Brazil’s new-vehicle market reached 9.7% in October, up from 4.2% a year earlier. The company registered 24,114 vehicles during the month, an increase of 137.6% year on year, according to figures it provided to Bloomberg News on November 3.

The increase comes as BYD expands its manufacturing operations in Camaçari, in the northeastern state of Bahia. The plant has assembled more than 150,000 vehicles from semi-knocked-down kits imported from China. The site’s new welding and painting lines are undergoing testing, while work on its stamping facility is further along.

The next phase will bring more manufacturing steps into the Brazilian plant and increase the use of locally sourced parts. BYD Brazil senior vice president Alexandre Baldy told Reuters that the company expects to reach about 50% local content by early 2027 and sees greater localisation as a step towards exporting to other markets in the region.

The October figures measure BYD’s share of new registrations for the month. As the plant adds manufacturing capacity, subsequent registration figures will show how well local output tracks demand in Brazil.
