This year, the theme for AWE (Appliance & Electronics World Expo Shanghai) is "Home for Next", a broad array of innovative products and solutions will be presented.
Richard Yu (余承东), Executive Director and CEO of the Consumer Business Group, talked on AWE held in Shanghai March 14, 2019, that he expects the shipments of Huawei phones (including Honor) will reach 250-260 million globally becoming the world’s first. In addition, Yu disclosed that Huawei is developing its own operating system for phones and computers.
For quick reference: in 2018, the number of global phone shipments is 1.4 billion, Samsung and Apple have shipped 292.3 million and 208.8 million respectively. In the same year, Huawe was ranked third with global shipments of 206 million.
YU said now Huawei phones constitute 34 percent of the total upmarket phones in China, by the end of this year, the figure is expected to increase to 50 percent. He also claimed that for every three phones sold in China, one is Huawei.
YU further declares Huawei phones only target medium-to-high market instead of low-end market. To better target upmarket, Huawei also separated Honor as a standalone brand.
In addition, YU reckoned that phones as important gateways access to get digitalize and "intelligentize". That's perhaps another reason why Huawei emphasizes and values the sales figures other than profitability perspective.

Additionally, Huawei is developing its own operating system for phones and computers in case that American tech giants stop granting access to the systems. According to some rumors, this operating system started in 2012.
YU said this is a Plan B if Android cannot be used then they will start using its own operating system.
Huawei Spokesman said earlier that Huawei does not intend to use its own system unless it is necessary. Huawei will support and set Android and Microsoft as priority choices since these two systems are also preferred by customers.
