NIO Upgrades Autopilot System and Smart Operating System

Chinese new car manufacturer NIO announced upgrades to its Pilot system and OS 2.0 smart operating system on June 10.

Founded in November 2014, NIO now has more than 9000 employees worldwide. It has set up R&D and production facilities in 11 locations around the world, including Shanghai, Beijing, San Jose, Munich and London, and initially established a nationwide customer service system in the Chinese market.

NIO officially began to deliver its first model, ES8, to consumers on June 28, 2018. The ES8 is produced at a fully automated factory and finished a 3,000,000 km road test before NIO begins delivering the vehicle to users. 

NIO also introduced NIO Pilot, its autonomous driving assistance system. NIO Pilot is enabled by 23 sensors, including a trifocal front-facing camera, four surround exterior cameras, five millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a driver monitor camera. The ES8 is also the first vehicle to come equipped with the Mobileye EyeQ4. NIO Pilot's software and hardware suite enable subscribers to enjoy upgraded services through FOTA updates.

The new NIO Pilot system has added seven new functions, including Highway Pilot, Traffic Jam Pilot, Auto Lane Change controlled by turn signals, etc. After this upgrade, NIO Pilot system officially becomes an L2 level automatic driving assistance system with horizontal and vertical control capability. Its automatic driving control algorithm, underlying software and ADAS controller are all being developed by NIO teams in China and North America.

Only by mastering the core technology can we respond to user feedback more quickly, thus accelerating the speed of iteration and providing a product experience that truly exceeds user expectations," said Jamie Carlson, Vice President of NIO autonomous driving division.

The main interface of the centre control screen is adjusted from 3 screens to 1 screen. After add more screen gestures, users can complete all operations through the screen gestures; The new design of fast control also supports user customization; NIO intelligent operating system integrates Baidu map, QQ music, Ximalaya FM and other rich third-party contents, in addition to integrating the sound-based online community NIO Radio.
