As Huawei responds to US sanctions, which limited Huawei devices’ access to apps with Google services, the company has been working hard on the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) alternative. The rising tally of developers in the HMS ecosystem means it is close to replacing GMS.

According to the company, 1.6 million HMS developers were supporting the company as of the first half-year of 2020, presenting a 76% year-on-year growth. More than 81,000 innovative applications integrated ‘HMS Core’ open capabilities. The number of applications has increased 26,000 since February this year.

Besides, the company reveals that Huawei mobile users have reached 700 million globally with a 32% year-on-year growth. The volume is catching up with that of Apple (AAPL:NASDAQ). With a considerable user base, Huawei is rapidly developing its replacement of Google (GOOG:NASDAQ) services.

“AppGallery, Huawei’s official app distribution platform, covers more than 170 countries and regions. With this coverage, we hope to share local digital innovation with the world. We want every innovative app developed by global partners to reach all 700 million Huawei device users,” said Zhang Ping’an, president of Consumer Cloud Service, Huawei Consumer Business Group.

One week earlier, the company launched HMS Core 5.0 for global developers on the official Developer website. HMS Core 5.0 is a successor to Core 4.0 with more than 20 newly added capabilities to meet the growing needs of developers worldwide. With the releases of HMS Core 5.0 and the HarmonyOS 2.0, Huawei is determined to build its own self-sufficient mobile ecosystem.
