Globally a third of all food is wasted, accounting for around 8% of global greenhouse gasses, causing approximately $1trn per year to be lost in value. Artificial Intelligence has a key role to play in addressing this problem, helping create a more efficient global food system. Winnow creates Artificial Intelligence tools to help chefs run more profitable and sustainable kitchens by cutting food waste in half. Marc Zornes is a renowned expert in food and sustainability and created Winnow because he believes food is too valuable to waste. “I started Winnow because I saw a massive opportunity in solving the problem of food waste. I believe that food is too valuable to waste, and that technology can help us change the way we make food. I started my career at a large wholesale grocers, and food and sustainability have been my two passions ever since,” Marc expressed.
Prior to Winnow’s establishment, Marc worked as a former Manager at McKinsey & Company where he was a leader in the Sustainability and Consumer practices. While at McKinsey, Marc co-authored the Global Institute Report ‘Resource Revolution: Meeting the World’s Energy, Materials, Food, and Water Needs.’ In developing this report, his team highlighted food waste as one of the biggest issues globally and yet very little was being done about it.
Consequently, Marc then left McKinsey to found Winnow which has created a revolutionary technology that will help willing chefs run their kitchens more efficiently – to start, by supporting them as they learn to understand and prevent food waste. Nowadays, Winnow is considered as a Series B startup, having raised over $31.6 million in funding. Marc and Winnow are well recognized leaders in their field, with various accolades including an FT Transformational Business Award and a Circular from the World Economic Forum.
