Dr. Zhang cited the integration of ChatGPT as an example of their technical prowess, although he also noted that the long-term impact of such technologies in the cycling industry remains to be seen. However, he assured that Urtopia's open system would allow them to quickly adopt and integrate new technologies as they emerge.

Dr. Zhang further highlighted Urtopia's design philosophy, which is a result of collaborations with top-tier designers and artists. For instance, the company enlisted the expertise of a former BMW designer, Mr. Heller, for the conceptual design of their Explorer model. Their UI design, Fusion, has also garnered attention, with renowned design firm Frog Design endorsing it. Dr. Zhangexpressed his pride in the collaboration with renowned resources, even highlighting the partnership with pianist Maxim to create a design story centered around the piano's core concept and aesthetics. This commitment to design excellence is evident in Urtopia's captivating visuals, leaving a lasting impression on consumers.

Turning to product stability, Dr. Zhang addressed concerns about battery performance, a crucial aspect of electric bikes. He emphasized that Urtopia prioritizes product quality, particularly in the selection of batteries. Urtopia uses Samsung batteries, widely recognized as the safest in the industry, ensuring exceptional stability. Additionally, Urtopia has optimized the charging process, utilizing fast-charging technologies and enhancing the charging duration. With a charging time of just 2.5 hours, Urtopia stands out from competitors, some of whom require up to 8 hours for a full charge.

Dr. Zhang proudly revealed that Urtopia's overall fault rate is less than 1%, which is significantly lower than the industry average of around 10%. This impressive statistic showcases the company's commitment to quality and reliability. Moreover, Urtopia's emphasis on safety is evident in its business practices. The company purchases commercial insurance, which covers potential risks associated with the bike, including battery-related issues. Dr. Zhanghighlighted that such precautions are necessary, as many consumers neglect to acquire adequate insurance coverage, potentially leaving them vulnerable in case of an accident.

In response to a question regarding the duration of the bike's usability after a full charge, Dr. Zhang mentioned that, under assistance mode one, the bike can travel up to 100 kilometers. The Fusion model, equipped with a dual-battery system (750Wh and 360Wh), boasts an impressive range of 160 kilometers. Dr. Zhanghinted that recent adjustments might even extend the range to 180 kilometers, further solidifying Urtopia's advantage in battery life and endurance.

Pricing Strategy, Market Focus, and Technological Vision for E-Bikes

When asked about Urtopia's pricing strategy, Dr. Zhang explained that their target market primarily consists of urban middle-class consumers who value quality and have a curiosity for new technologies. Taking into account market analysis and the fact that over 70% of e-bikes in Europe are priced above €2,000, Urtopia positioned itself as a premium brand, competing with established European and American brands like Giant, Trek, and KTM. By offering differentiated design and proprietary technology, Urtopia has the pricing power to set their e-bikes at around €3,000 in Europe and close to $3,000 in the US.

Urtopia defines itself as a product-focused company rather than a supply chain or marketing-oriented company, emphasizing the importance of high gross profit margins in the product industry. In terms of sales volume, Dr. Zhang refrained from providing specific figures due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing financing period. However, Urtopia's sales in the US and Europe combined amount to nearly 20,000 units, showcasing the brand's growth and market success.

Expanding on the challenges faced during the company's international expansion, Dr. Zhang mentioned that aftersales service was a significant concern for European and American customers. To address this, Urtopia established a presence in Germany, with dedicated staff and offices. They also partnered with over 30 bike stores in Germany, allowing customers to receive prompt repairs and service. Furthermore, Urtopia's unique selling point lies in its smart system, enabling users to submit service requests through its app. By streamlining the process and providing real-time diagnostic information to partner stores, Urtopia ensures efficient and high-quality aftersales support, which sets them apart from traditional brands.

Regarding sales channels, Dr. Zhang confirmed that Urtopia has established partnerships with nearly 100 stores in the US and Germany, including retail chains like Media Markt and the industry. Additionally, the company employs a comprehensive omnichannel strategy, selling directly online and exploring collaborations with large supermarkets and retailers. Recognizing the inherent offline attributes of the industry, Urtopia aims to utilize its high gross profit margin advantage to deploy a multi-channel marketing approach, leveraging suitable distribution channels.

In terms of technological advancements, Dr. Zhang highlighted Urtopia's ambition to create an open ecosystem by integrating technologies such as ChatGPT, Apple Watch, and Strava, as well as popular platforms like Komoot. By developing its software and control system in-house, Urtopia has the flexibility to integrate cutting-edge technologies that enhance user experience and offer personalized features. Moreover, the company focuses on core components, exploring advancements in electric motors, transmissions, and braking systems to further improve their e-bikes.

Present and Future of the E-bike Industry; Broder Vision of Urtopia

According to Dr. Zhang, Urtopia’s goal is to gradually establish itself as a mainstream brand in both European and American markets, competing with well-established players. Dr. Zhang highlighted how many users have begun comparing Urtopia's e-bikes to popular brands and ultimately opted to sell their previous bikes, such as the Trek Domane, in favor of Urtopia's offerings.

He emphasizes that Urtopia is currently the only Chinese company that has entered the mainstream price range in Europe and the United States. He points out that most Chinese companies' pricing in overseas markets is concentrated below 2,000 euros or 2,000 US dollars, which is not considered truly mainstream. Therefore, Urtopia's positioning allows it to represent Chinese brands going global and promoting Chinese culture, with the opportunity to gain a foothold in overseas markets.

When it comes to the maturity and widespread adoption of e-bike technology, Dr. Zhang believes the industry has reached a relatively mature stage. With Europe alone witnessing the sale of six million e-bikes last year, and demand remaining robust despite high inventory levels, e-bikes have undoubtedly entered a phase of significant application and adoption.

However, Dr. Zhang also stressed the industry's inherent traditional nature, with many companies basing their e-bikes on traditional bicycle technology and retrofitting them with electric systems. He believes that there is untapped potential in e-bike technology and compares his company's approach to Apple's entry into the smartphone market, aiming to create an ecosystem platform by integrating hardware and software to provide a richer user experience.

Furthermore, Dr. Zhang envisions Urtopia as a pioneer in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. Urtopia has received certification from a renowned European authority, Bureau Veritas, for its entire carbon-neutral process. From production to user carbon offsetting, Urtopia's bikes can achieve carbon neutrality after approximately 2,000 kilometers of riding. By quantifying their ESG efforts, Urtopia aims to provide users with certified data that can potentially be used for tax deductions or even monetization, depending on governmental policies. Dr. Zhang expresses pride in Urtopia's measurable ESG commitment, which benefits from its "smart" approach.

Turning to the domestic market, Dr. Zhang acknowledges the relatively low penetration of intelligent mobility devices like Urtopia's e-bikes. However, he believes that as environmental consciousness and health considerations gain prominence in China, the market for e-bikes, with their eco-friendly nature, holds significant potential for growth.

Addressing the regulatory landscape, Dr. Zhang notes that China has relatively comprehensive regulations, similar to those in Europe, for managing e-bikes. However, he highlights the challenges in the enforcement of regulations, particularly in terms of bike lanes and adherence to regulations. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic, highlighting the positive cycling environments in Beijing and Shanghai, which can potentially set an example for the rest of China.
