On February 26, according to The Information, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning a massive USD 200 billion (CNY 1454 billion) data center project aimed at providing robust infrastructure support for its artificial intelligence operations. This scale far surpasses any of Meta's previous data center projects and is seen as a critical strategy in Meta's intense competition with rivals like OpenAI in the field of generative AI.

Meta executives revealed that the data center may require a power supply of 5-7 gigawatts, exceeding the current power capacity of about 5 gigawatts for Microsoft's Azure cloud business, while OpenAI plans to obtain 8 gigawatts of power for its "Stargate" project by 2030. To meet the demands, Meta is considering locations in Louisiana, Wyoming, or Texas for construction.

Currently, Meta uses its own data centers and rents AI servers from cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Oracle.

With the rise of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT from OpenAI, tech giants have been increasing their investments in the AI sector.

Last week, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced a joint venture to invest USD 500 billion (CNY 3,634 billion) over the next four years to launch the construction of 10 AI data centers in Abilene, Texas.

During the latest company earnings call, Zuckerberg stated that Meta plans to invest "hundreds of billions of dollars" in AI infrastructure in the long term, with financial expenditures expected to rise to USD 60−65 billion (CNY 436−472 billion) in 2025, primarily for AI development. Meta anticipates achieving 1 gigawatt of computing capacity by 2025.
