According to CNBC, the UK said on Friday that a new government department would work to address persistent concerns about the concentration of power by a few technology giants. The Ministry of digital, culture, media and Sport said it planned to set up a digital market unit (DMU) to implement "a new code to regulate the conduct of platforms that currently dominate markets, such as Google and Facebook." The UK government said the rules were designed to ensure that consumers, small businesses and news publishers were not disadvantaged by the actions of technology giants. It is understood that the DMU will become part of the UK competition and market authority (CMA) and will begin work in April 2021.
