China's scientists have made important progress in the research of stem cell therapy for diabetes. The collaboration between the Deng Hongkui research team of Peking University, the Peng Xiaozhong research team of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Shen Zhongyang research team of Tianjin First Central Hospital solved the problem of highly effective induction of human pluripotent stem cells (IPS) into functional mature islet cells. It is expected to become a more ideal treatment for the treatment of type 1 diabetes in the future. Using the preclinical primate diabetes animal model, the team systematically evaluated the safety and efficacy of islet transplantation from IPS for diabetes mellitus, and laid a solid foundation for further standardizing the clinical research of IPS islet transplantation for diabetes.
