In order to achieve Huawei’s “AI + Cloud” strategy, Huawei introduced its strategy and target of the cloud business in detail and showed its determination of the “Cloud Only” strategy.
On Apr 16, 2019, Huawei held the 16th global analyst summit in Shenzhen. Analysts, customers, and media from all over the world joined the summit. In the summit, Huawei showed its technology innovation and the latest news about its business. In order to achieve Huawei’s “AI + Cloud” strategy, Huawei introduced its strategy and target of the cloud business in detail and showed its determination of the “Cloud Only” strategy. WANG Tao (汪涛), the president of Huawei’s ICT strategy and marketing, introduced that all of the industries have entered the time of Cloud 2.0. The main force of the cloud service is government and enterprises, and the mixed cloud has become the leading role of the Cloud 2.0 time. In terms of cloud service, it is Huawei’s core strategy to build the best-mixed cloud.
By the end of 2018, Huawei bettered the infrastructures of its ICT business and recombined its public cloud, private cloud, AI, big data, computing, store, IoT businesses into “Computing and Cloud” industrial cluster. Based on this, Huawei built “Cloud & AI products and services”. In 2019 Q1, Huawei combined its IoT and private cloud team with Cloud Bu, which is the cloud service department of Huawei. WANG Tao said that all of these kinds of measures aim to achieve Huawei’s “Cloud Only” strategy and create more value for Huawei’s customers. With the investment, Huawei Cloud wants to become the only cloud which has the full stack capability and the cloud that is most intelligent.
Actually, with the integration of the resources and organizations, Huawei Cloud has built a full production line ranging from chips to data center, from the hardware to software, from IT infrastructure, and from the edge computing to cloud computing. ZHENG Yelai (郑叶来), the vice president of Huawei, and the president of Huawei Cloud Bu said that the cloud service has the convergence effect. Huawei cloud will help the traditional enterprises and government to move their apps to the cloud terminal.
Huawei cloud is the only cloud service provider that has the full stack capability. It could achieve the full stack better of the infrastructure of the data center, chips, hardware, and basic cloud service. The better is not only the innovation of hardware but also the improvement of the software performance. For example, the BMS + InfiniBand technology could improve the Huawei cloud’s training efficiency of the AI models, which is 25% higher than the competitors. Huawei cloud owns the tiny service structure ServiceStage, which has the best performance that is twice of the competitors.
On the other hand, Huawei cloud is an intelligent cloud based on Huawei’s full stack solution. Huawei cloud builds its full stack AI ability based on the chips. The Ascend chip has the largest unit computing density, while the ARM64 chip has the highest energy-performance ratio. So far, Huawei cloud has explored the commercialization of the AI technology in more than 10 industries and 200 projects. These experiments would further better the products and services of Huawei cloud AI.
Chinese cloud computing service industry is dominated by Ali Cloud, which occupies a 43% market share. Huawei Cloud, however, although has a relatively less market share, but with its strong R & D ability, it might be a great competitor of Ali Cloud.
