Shen Fei also recommended users to charge below 90 percent of the battery in daily use when not connected to the Internet or when using third-party charging piles, unless necessary.

Shen Fei, Vice President of NIO Energy, published "Interim Measures to Enhance Charging Safety" on its official APP on the evening of May 17. NIO will take temporary measures to limit the amount of charging to 90 percent for exclusive piles and vehicles that are connected to the network due to the principle of safety and prudence, the article said.

This is a response to an accident about NIO ES8. Smoke suddenly appeared on an NIO ES8 in the underground garage of a residential community near Anli road, Jiading district, Shanghai at 18:16 on May 16.

The owner of ES8 reviewed the whole thing through the NIO APP late that night. He said that the car had not been refitted and was running normally. It had been parked in the garage for four days without charging. In this case, the car didn't catch fire, it just produced a lot of smoke.

“We also recommended users to charge below 90 percent of the battery in daily use when not connected to the Internet or when using third-party charging piles, unless necessary,” said Shen.

Shen Fei also responded to the claim by saying, the accident vehicle was parked for 4 days in the state of charging gun insertion. After being fully charged, the system will automatically recharge for many times to keep the battery fully charged for a long time. In the state of high power for a long time, the failure probability of the power battery will increase. In addition, this does not mean that the accident was caused by charging, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

NIO was made a statement about the incident at around 21:28. NIO said fire officers and soldiers rushed to the scene in the first time to put out the smoke without any personal or property damage. Cause of vehicle smoke is not clear, the company has launched an investigation, to be identified after the cause will be announced in a timely manner.
