On December 10, Great Wall Motors announces the company's plans to establish a new independent brand of intelligent electric vehicles, and the project is named "SL project" internally. The price of the intelligent electric vehicles from the brand is expected to be higher than existing models. In July 2020, Wei Jianjun, the chairman of Great Wall Motors, points out that Great Wall Motors must look at ways to transform itself into a smart travel company.
Since the second half of 2020, with the booming of EVs' sales volume and the soaring NIO and XPEV stock prices, intelligent EV has become a development consensus of the automobile industry. Traditional vehicle companies are also speeding up the pace of EV technology research. Besides Great Wall Motors, Dongfeng Motor, GAC group, Chang'an Automobile, and SAIC Group also joins this competition.
According to Li Peng, the digital executive officer of Great Wall Motors, the traditional vehicle companies only have two to three years left to catch the tail wind generated by EV. The cutting-edge concepts such as 5g, AI, and big data will bring an overall upgrading of the automobile industry.
