A move is similar to Huawei's intelligent car Bu business.
According to Tencent News, on March 2, 2021, Chinese partially state-owned telecommunication company, ZTE issued an internal document on stating that the firm will set up an automotive electronic product line, which will be responsible for coordinating the relevant R&D and business units.
ZTE will set up an automotive electronics team, which is subordinate to the system product technology planning department and is responsible for unified business planning and operation in the automotive electronics field.
The news was officially confirmed by the firm upon being asked.
This is not the first time ZTE has entered the automotive field. As early as 2016, ZTE successfully acquired Zhuhai Granton Bus And Coach Co., Ltd. and later established ZTE Intelligent Automobile Co., Ltd.
Initially, ZTE focused on the development of new energy commercial vehicles such as buses given its expertise in wireless charging technology.
However, with the market changes, the entry of many new EV-makers such as NIO and Xpeng and as well as the pursuit of Internet giants such as Baidu, ZTE seems to have shifted its business focus to the booming electric passenger car market.
At present, ZTE is positioned as a supplier of automotive electronic products, mainly laying out automatic driving enabling products, such as its self-developed 5G-v2x solution, including 5G car link module c-v2x, industrial roadside unit RSU, remote cloud control platform, etc.
