China Becomes the Largest Source of EU's Automobile Imports in 2024

On April 1, the EU released the trade data of the EU automobile industry in 2024. With an import value of EUR 12.7 billion (CNY 99.63 billion), China has become the largest source of automobile imports for the EU.

In 2024, the EU exported a total of 5.4 million automobiles and imported 4 million automobiles. Compared with 2019, the export volume decreased by 13.2%, while the import volume decreased by 3.0%. In terms of trade amount, the total export value of automobiles in the EU in 2024 was EUR 165.2 billion, and the total import value was EUR 75.9 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of EUR 89.3 billion.

During the five years from 2019 to 2024, the increase in the EU's automobile imports from China reached 1591.3%. Despite this, the EU maintained a trade surplus in automobile trade with China in 2024, with exports to China amounting to EUR 14.5 billion. In 2024, the EU exported 5.4 million automobiles and imported 4 million automobiles. Compared with 2019, the export volume decreased by 13.2%, while the import volume decreased by 3.0%.

In 2024, the EU's export trade volume to China was EUR 213.3 billion, and the import trade volume from China was EUR 517.8 billion, with a deficit of EUR 304.5 billion.

Among the products imported by the EU from China in 2024, the largest category was electrical machinery, apparatus and electrical parts (EUR 96.8 billion); followed by telecommunications and sound equipment (EUR 60.9 billion) and office machines and data processing machines such as personal computers and servers (EUR 45.9 billion).
