BYD targets Japan's K-Car segment with Nissan Sakura in sights, potentially becoming first foreign automaker to develop Japan-specific models.

BYD is currently developing an electric "K-Car" specifically for the Japanese market, aiming to challenge Japan's best-selling EV—the Nissan Sakura. The model is scheduled for launch in 2026 with a starting price of approximately USD 18,250 (CNY 1.33 million). Notably, as few foreign automakers have ventured into this niche segment, BYD could become the first overseas manufacturer to design a K-Car tailored exclusively for Japanese consumers.

K-Cars represent a unique vehicle category in Japan, developed in response to narrow roads and dense urban environments. These compact cars offer convenient, economical, and culturally distinctive mobility solutions. Japanese buyers enjoy added benefits like exemption from parking space certification requirements, along with government subsidies and tax incentives.

BYD made history in July 2022 as the first Chinese NEV brand to enter Japan's passenger car market. Its current lineup includes four models: the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7. According to January 9 data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association, BYD's 2024 pure EV sales in Japan surged 54% year-on-year to 2,223 units—surpassing Toyota for the first time.

Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, revealed the company's ambitious plans: establishing 100 dealerships in Japan by 2025 with an annual sales target of 30,000 electric vehicles.
