Chinese autonomous-driving company WeRide (文远知行) began operating its Robobus autonomous minibus in fully driverless mode on Singapore’s Sentosa island on July 17, becoming the first autonomous vehicle in Southeast Asia to provide public passenger service without a safety driver onboard. The milestone marks a significant step in the overseas commercialization of China’s Level-4 autonomous-driving technology, moving beyond pilot programs toward regular public operation.
The Robobus is now running on Sentosa, one of Singapore’s most popular tourism destinations, without any human supervisor inside the vehicle. According to WeRide, the deployment represents the first time an autonomous shuttle in Southeast Asia has provided passenger transportation services under a fully driverless model. The company previously operated the service with onboard attendants before gradually removing human assistance, allowing it to accumulate operational experience and demonstrate safety performance to local regulators.
