China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation Limited (中国通号, CRSC) has secured a signaling-system upgrade for Cairo Metro Line 1’s Tura depot and signed a systems-integration contract for a tram project on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island.
The two projects extend CRSC’s overseas rail-transit business in North Africa and Southeast Asia. The Vietnam contract marks the group’s first entry into Vietnam’s rail “four-electric” systems-integration market, according to CRSC.
In Egypt, Casco Signal, a CRSC subsidiary, won the EPC contract to upgrade the signaling system at the Tura depot on Cairo Metro Line 1. Casco will undertake the system’s design, procurement and construction, replacing aging depot equipment with electronic computer interlocking, automatic train supervision, maintenance-support, power and axle-counting systems.
Cairo Metro Line 1 entered service in the 1980s and is the city’s oldest metro corridor. CRSC described the Tura depot as the line’s largest maintenance and stabling facility. The upgraded system is designed to meet Safety Integrity Level 4, or SIL4, and to remain compatible with the line’s existing signaling system while preserving an interface for a future mainline communications-based train-control upgrade.
In Vietnam, CRSC International signed, as part of a consortium, the Phase I EPC contract for four-electric systems integration on the Phu Quoc Island tramway. The line is planned to link Phu Quoc International Airport with the APEC Convention and Exhibition Center.
CRSC International will supply, install, integrate and commission the project’s signaling, communications, information and power systems. The planned tramway will run about 17.56 kilometers, including elevated, at-grade and underground sections, with six stations and a depot-based control center.
The project is intended to support transport services for Vietnam’s planned 2027 APEC summit on Phu Quoc Island. It is a signed EPC systems contract, however, not evidence that the line has begun construction or entered operation.
For CRSC, the projects demonstrate the export of higher-value rail-control and systems-integration capabilities rather than standalone equipment alone. The next milestones to watch are implementation of the Cairo depot upgrade and the Phu Quoc tramway’s detailed design, construction schedule and commissioning progress.
