Apple Intelligence China Beta Due Later in October, with Alibaba’s Qwen Integration

Apple(苹果)plans to release a test version of Apple Intelligence in mainland China later in October, incorporating capabilities from Alibaba’s Qwen(千问)model family. The rollout would bring selected AI features to Chinese users while giving Alibaba a distribution channel within Apple’s device ecosystem.

Speaking to reporters in Shanghai on October 15, Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook said Apple Intelligence and the related Alibaba Qwen model had received approval. The initial features will include live translation, Writing Tools and the Clean Up photo-editing tool. The upgraded Siri AI is outside the scope of this release.

Alibaba has separately said Qwen capabilities will be integrated into Apple Intelligence for users in China across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS. The companies have not publicly detailed which models will power each feature or how processing will be divided between devices and cloud infrastructure. The announcement therefore does not establish that Qwen will replace Apple’s own models or underpin every function.

The cooperation builds on a relationship publicly confirmed by Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai in February 2025. Subsequent filings and statements have outlined progress toward a localized service, with the October beta providing the next opportunity to assess its implementation.

For Apple, the rollout would begin addressing a gap between the AI features available in mainland China and those offered in other markets. Its initial scope remains limited, and the availability of selected tools should be distinguished from the introduction of the broader Siri upgrade.

For Alibaba, integration offers access to users through familiar device functions rather than requiring them to download a separate AI application. Its commercial significance will depend on the capabilities made available, their reliability and how frequently users choose to use them. Financial terms and expected revenue contributions have not been disclosed.

The arrangement illustrates how Chinese model providers can work with international technology companies on market-specific products. It is an example of a global platform adopting Chinese AI capabilities for localization, rather than evidence of deployment outside China.

The next milestone is the beta itself: supported devices, feature availability and performance will provide a clearer measure of what the partnership delivers. Wider conclusions about global adoption or competitive standing will require evidence beyond regulatory approval and an integration announcement.
