CATL Expands Overseas Storage Partnerships Across Australia, Europe and Chile

CATL(宁德时代)has outlined overseas energy-storage progress spanning Australian project supply, proposed sodium-ion deployments in Europe and a multi-country supply agreement with ContourGlobal. The developments show a business extending beyond battery cells into storage systems and lifecycle services, although the projects remain at different stages of implementation.

In Australia, CATL supplies battery energy storage systems for Quinbrook’s Supernode development near Brisbane. An August announcement said Stage 2 had entered commercial operation and Stage 3 had secured financing. The first three stages are expected to reach a combined 780MW/3,074MWh, meaning the capacity exceeding 3GWh should not be described as entirely operational.

CATL supplies EnerC Plus systems for the first two stages and plans to supply TENER S systems for Stage 3. Its long-term service agreement also covers condition monitoring, performance tracking, fault response and preventive maintenance. These responsibilities extend beyond equipment delivery but do not establish CATL as the asset owner or electricity-market operator.

In Europe, CATL announced a memorandum of understanding with Dutch energy-solutions provider Alfen in July, covering plans to deploy 5GWh of sodium-ion storage systems from 2027. It separately signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Solarpro for 2GWh of sodium-ion systems in Central and Eastern Europe.

Both arrangements concern future deployment. Their stated capacities should be distinguished from equipment already delivered or projects connected to the grid. Solarpro and CATL’s previously commissioned 602MWh project in Bulgaria is a separate operational reference.

ContourGlobal’s August agreement covers approximately 3GWh of CATL storage systems for projects in the United Kingdom, Greece and Chile. Unlike the sodium-ion partnerships, this package uses lithium iron phosphate technology. ContourGlobal said the Greek and Chilean projects were under construction, while the Scottish project was in advanced development.

Together, the announcements illustrate several routes into overseas markets: system supply, technical cooperation and long-term service support. Local developers and integrators contribute project execution and market knowledge, while CATL provides battery technology and associated systems.

The commercial implications depend on delivery and operating performance. Framework capacities and proposed deployments do not establish realized revenue, profitability or asset ownership. The next milestones are firm implementation schedules, equipment deliveries, commissioning and sustained service performance—particularly for sodium-ion systems entering new grid environments.
