Tencent(腾讯)and Mastercard(万事达卡)announced on November 2 that Tencent’s cross-border payment platform, TenPay Global, had signed a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard to explore payment interoperability, remittances and AI-enabled commerce.

Announced during Hong Kong FinTech Week, the proposed collaboration aims to help international visitors use familiar digital wallets and banking apps at QR-enabled merchants in the Chinese mainland. It would connect Mastercard’s international network with the Weixin Pay ecosystem, giving participating payment providers another route to serve customers travelling to China.

The companies also plan to deepen their existing remittance cooperation through Mastercard Move, allowing more overseas senders to transfer funds into the Weixin ecosystem. Further areas of exploration include wallet innovation, payment infrastructure, security and fraud prevention.

Agentic commerce forms another part of the proposed collaboration, as the companies examine how payment authorization and security can support purchases initiated by AI agents.

For Tencent, the agreement extends cooperation with an established international payment network. Its immediate focus is connecting overseas payment services with Chinese merchants and recipients. Implementation will depend on participating institutions, technical integration and market-specific arrangements. The announcement did not provide a rollout timetable, transaction targets or commercial terms.
