At this stage, with the vigorous development of artificial intelligence, big data, quantum computing and other technologies, the world is entering a critical period in which the third scientific and technological revolution is turning into the fourth. During this period, more and more scientists have moved away from traditional concepts, devoted themselves to commercial construction, and turned from devoted scholars into scientific entrepreneurs.

In this historical process, high-tech enterprises driven by scientific entrepreneurs have produced enormous economic and social benefits. According to a survey conducted by two Stanford professors in 2011, since the establishment of Stanford University, alumni have established a total of nearly 40,000 companies, with average annual revenue of about $ 2.7 trillion. If these companies were combined they would be the 10th largest economy in the world.

Based on this, EO Intelligence has set its focus on the background of the managers of emerging companies with strong financing histories in the past three years at home and abroad. To select the ‘2020 Global Science Entrepreneur Top 50 List’ and the ‘A List of 200 Scientific Entrepreneurs,’ we used four key dimensions, including academic background, innovation ability, the strength of the company and social contribution.

At present, there is no unified and clear concept of ‘scientific entrepreneur’ on the market. After strenuous research and in-depth interviews in the early stage, EO Intelligence concluded that the best scientific entrepreneurs, despite not being scientists, have academic research capabilities and rigorous training backgrounds which they apply to the fullest in their new roles. With this pedigree it is easier to attract talents to follow them, to obtain capital approval and government support.

Why are scientific entrepreneurs so important?

Scientific and technological innovation has been the fundamental way for governments of all countries to achieve long-term sustainable economic and social development, and it has become the focus of competing investments.

On October 16, 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization released the World Intellectual Property Indicators 2019. The report states that, in 2018, innovators worldwide submitted a total of 3.3 million patent applications, achieving a ninth consecutive year of growth, an increase of 5.2%. Among them, China's State Intellectual Property Office received the largest number of patent applications in 2018, reaching 1.54 million, accounting for 46.4% of the global total. The highest number of patent applications per country, after the China Office, were in the United States, Japan, South Korea and the European Patent Office.

Nowadays, a new generation of scientists have stepped into the business world and exerted their talents in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and biomedicine. They have profoundly affected the world in the past five years of economic development and industrial innovation.

Global scientific entrepreneurs 50 list

In this report, the selection targets are core managers of emerging companies with strong active financing dynamics from January 1, 2017, to February 28, 2020.

Selection criteria include:

Has received systematic scientific thinking training, and has an education generally to the level of a Ph.D., and has worked in natural sciences or engineering technology research and development.

The operating company is recognized by the capital market and the financing rounds are in round A or above.

The operating company has future development potential and broad development prospects, without major negative news.

Based on the above criteria, EO Intelligence selected the 2020 Global Science Entrepreneur 200 List, which is referred to as the G200 list in the report for short. Among them, from the G200 list of people, the companies they worked for had active financing dynamics from February 2018 to February 2020. The financing rounds were in the middle and late stages (C round, D round, F round, IPO, a few B rounds) The 2020 Global Science Entrepreneur 50 List was selected for the conditions, referred to as the G50 list in the report, and presented in the figure below.
