At the “Xiaomi Future Image Technology Communication Conference” which was held in Beijing, Xiaomi announced that it will soon be rolling out a smart phone featuring a 64 megapixels camera and will be using Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 mobile CMOS image sensor.

The ISOCELL GW1 sensor is a large 1/1.7’’ senso. Xiaomi’s 64MP Redmi smartphone will come with camera features such as ISOCELL Plus for improved color reproduction, Smart ISO and Hybrid 3D HDR. Images captured with this new camera have a resolution of 9248 x 6936, and the size of each photo can reach a whopping 19MB, and if the users want to they can print 2.44m x 3.26m posters at 72dpi.

Xiaomi has posted on Twitter via the official account that the Redmi 64MP camera phone is the ‘Future of Camera’ and will deliver unprecedented details and 38 percent more pixel count than the 48MP camera sensor. The company also confirmed that the Redmi 64MP camera phone will be launched in India in Q4 2019.

Apart from Xiaomi, Realme and Samsung are also working on their respective handsets with 64MP sensors. While Realme will showcase the camera technology for smartphones on August 8th in India, there is no such timeline from Samsung at the moment.

Xiaomi's co-founder and president Lin Bin (林斌) stated that the new smartphone model will be part of the Redmi sub-brand series. "The sensor will be used on a flagship model which will soon be launched," he said.

Last year, Xiaomi officially started its international camera unit which focuses on imaging technology development. At present, Xiaomi has imaging technology R&D teams in Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
