Chiplet Chip Company Polar Bear Tech Closes New Funding Round of Over $100 Million. Polar Bear Tech (Chinese: 北极雄芯), a Chiplet chip company, has completed a new round of financing of more than CNY 100 million.
Founded in 2021, Polar Bear Tech was established at Tsinghua University's Institute of Cross-Information Research and incubated at Xi'an Cross-Information Core Technology Research. The company has already received investment from a number of well-known organizations. The company hopes to decouple the general-purpose part and the special-purpose part of the downstream chip demand in each scenario through Chiplet architecture, design and manufacture small chips and integrate them separately, so as to solve the problem of downstream customers balancing algorithm adaptation, iteration cycle, arithmetic utilization, arithmetic cost and other aspects.
Under the current technical and cost dilemmas of domestic advanced process development obstacles and the continuation of Moore's Law, the Chiplet program is one of the only ways to meet the growing demand for large-scale computing application scenarios.
Chiplet is a technology route in which different modules in the chip, such as computing, control, transmission, interface, etc., are designed and manufactured according to further processes, and then each module is packaged together through high-speed interconnection.
AI is increasingly used in various industries, and there are differentiated contents in each industry. Still, most downstream customers need to face the pain points of low utilization of general-purpose chip arithmetic and the high cost of special-purpose chips.
Through Chiplet, Polar Bear Tech hopes to provide functional modules including AI acceleration, multimedia processing, etc. for the needs of different segmented scenarios and domains, so that the utilization rate of the chip can be maximized. This not only improves the utilization of computing power but also avoids the problem of the high cost of mass production of ASIC chips.
Polar Bear Tech mainly focuses on the development of three types of products, one is the HUB Chiplet, the second is Functional Chiplet, which can be quickly developed and meet the downstream differentiated needs, and the third is the D2D interface.
In the future, Polar Bear Tech hopes to deploy its products in a big cloud and big edge scenarios, where the cloud is mainly used to meet all kinds of AI reasoning needs, and the edge is represented by diversified intelligent driving scenarios.
The investors of this round are Harvest Capital(Chinese: 丰年资本) and Zhengwei Capital(Chinese: 正为资本). Proceeds from this round will mainly be used to develop the next generation of general-purpose chiplets and functional chiplets, while the company will continue to invest in the research and development of chiplet basic technologies such as high-speed interconnected chiplet interfaces.
