It is reported that the US Air Force recently awarded SpaceX a five-year, US $102 million rocket cargo contract to demonstrate the technology and ability to transport military materials and provide assistance with heavy rockets. The contract is not for any SpaceX launch vehicle. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory will use SpaceX's commercial orbital launch and landing to collect key data on environmental characteristics and performance. Greg spanjers, project manager of rocket freight, said that the contract will formally establish the cooperative relationship between the government and the industry to help determine what effect can be achieved when a rocket is used for freight, real capacity, speed and the cost of integrated system.
