On January 27, 2021, CATL said in the Global New Energy Vehicle Conference (GNEV11) that the company plans to introduce highly-integrated Cell to Chassis (CTC) battery technology in 2025. According to CATL, the cells can be directly integrated into the chassis to achieve a higher degree of integration via this technology.

CATL launched the first-generation battery technology for EVs, cell to pack (CTP),  in 2019. CTP battery packs are manufactured by directly putting the cells into the battery pack. Compared with the traditional battery pack, CTP battery packs increase the volume utilization rate by up to 20% and improve the production efficiency by nearly 50%. Up to now, CTP battery packs have been used in domestic Tesla’s Model 3 and NIO’s models.

The CTC technology under study is more innovative than CTP technology. CTC technology is projected to provide a strong card to EV manufacturers in the price and capacity war with traditional ones. Moreover, CTC technology can greatly reduce the weight and volume of battery packs, which enables the driving range of EVs to reach 800 kilometers. From our point of view, stimulated by CATL’s continuing innovation, new battery structures have gradually become an important means for major battery enterprises to reduce costs.
