Yunnan province is located in China’s southwest. Its geography is very uneven, with scattered basins and plateaus. Because of this particular geographical situation, it has not been considered suitable for Yunnan province to construct railways – airports were seen as more useful. Hence, there are massive airports in Yunnan province, supporting its transportation.

Based on Yunnan province’s travel difficulties – China Eastern Airlines is exploring more air routes within the region, promoting the development of society, culture and economy. Moreover, 2020 is the seventh 'poverty alleviation year' in China. The primary purpose is to help poor people, decreasing the rate of citizens afflicted by poverty.

As for Yunnan’s performance in overcoming poverty, around 48 poor counties got rid of poverty in April 2019, accounting for 54.4% of the total poor towns. Specifically, 40 poor counties still need to be rescued by the end of 2020. To respond to this challenge, China Eastern Airlines has put CNY 90 million to save Yunnan’s poor areas, recovering and expanding its air routes.
