Meituan (3690: HK), China’s online food delivery platform, is making agreements with nearly 80 hotels, small-sized indoor stadiums and offices in all districts of Shanghai, to offer free temporary accommodations to over 4,500 delivery riders and frontline logistics personnel during their service in Shanghai.

With Shanghai into its third week of a Covid lockdown since March 28, some residents are running low on food. The difficulty of buying food is mainly due to the lack of sorting and distribution capacity, and thus Meituan has dispatched 1,000 extra delivery riders to Shanghai from neighboring cities or provinces to ensure food supply for residents amid restrictions.

According to reports on March 29, Meituan opened the first batch of 31 free accommodations in areas severely affected by the Omicron variant. Up to now, over 5,000 rooms were already in service. To reserve free accommodation in hotels and stadiums, Meituan staff could contact their superiors or call the hotline 10101777.

Moreover, Meituan will provide subsidies and assistance to delivery riders and frontline logistics personnel during the epidemic.

Many other e-commerce companies and food delivery platforms have joined in the battle against the resurgence of the Omicron variant in Shanghai, such as JD.com, Ele.me, RT-Mart (Chinese: 大润发) and Missfresh (Chinese: 每日优鲜).
