Wang Ningli, chairman of the public health ophthalmology branch of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, said at the press conference of the National Health Commission that in order to comprehensively assess the myopia rate of children and adolescents, a special survey on myopia was carried out in China from September to December 2020, covering 8604 schools nationwide and screening 2.477 million students. The results show that the overall myopia rate of children and adolescents in 2020 is 52.7%. Among them, 14.3% were 6-year-old children, 35.6% were primary school students, 71.1% were junior high school students and 80.5% were senior high school students. The overall myopia rate in 2020 increased by 2.5 percentage points compared with that in 2019 (50.2%), but still decreased by 0.9 percentage points compared with that in 2018 (53.6%).
