Companies with a high degree of automation and digitalization are more capable to cope with the impact of the epidemic.

The haze of trade disputes has not yet dissipated, and the global economy has once again been hit dramatically by the COVID-19. Under the impact of COVID-19, enterprises' production activities have been affected by the "great lockdown“. Due to the increasing of order cancellation and delivery delay PMI index has been below threshold for five consecutive months.

Companies with a high degree of automation and digitalization are more capable to cope with the impact of the epidemic. First of all, automated production lines can effectively avoid the spread of the epidemic caused by the accumulation of people when work and production are recovering. Secondly, relying on strong flexible production capacity and digital basis, many manufacturing enterprises and intelligent manufacturing system integration enterprises can form mask production capacity in a very short time.

The fact that enterprises produce across boundaries shows the role of flexible production and production system digitization supported by intelligent manufacturing under extreme pressure. The ability brought by science and technology will be the core competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises in the future.

The epidemic has shaped market perceptions and exposed the shortcomings of traditional manufacturing industries that are insufficiently resilient under extreme pressure. This report focuses on how the new generation of information technology can empower traditional manufacturing, and deconstructs the concept of smart manufacturing. Clear the structure and context, combined with global funding activities in industrial robots, industrial Internet, industrial artificial intelligence applications, and provide some superficial insights.

The overall funding performance in smart manufacturing sector

In 2020, the total amount of funding in the global smart manufacturing sector has increased, and the number of funding activities has decreased. Among them, after IPO funding is the main source of growth. However, the funding of unlisted companies are relatively scattered, of which the total amount of series A round and series B round accounted for a relatively large amount.

Both decrease in number of event and increase in total funding amount indicates the investors have more confident in the lead company, so that the average amount of funding is increased and more concentrated.

For unlisted firms, the bond financing is affected by COVID-19, so that the main resource of funding is concentrated in equity financing. The total amount of unlisted companies’ bond financing has declined, various forms of subsidies (from NGOs or industry associtations) shows a trend in expanding due to the extreme situation.

From the perspective of the equity financing of unlisted companies, the funding before series B round shows an increasing trend of concentration, and the funding from round B to Pre-IPO (exclude) shows an overall downward trend (the total amount of financing decreased, the number of financing decreased, and the average amount of single funding event decreased). Specifically, the average single financing amount from series A and B rounds this year has increased by 98.8% and 31.4% respectively compared with 2019, and the average single financing amount for C and D rounds have fallen by 7.2% and 8.4%, respectively.

New tech will shape the traditional manufacturing in every aspect, and this report predicts the three possible tendency

Data shall be the core endowment in the future production. From the agriculture era to internet plus every, data has gradually become an important element of economic growth and production. The efficient allocation of data elements is a key part of promoting the development of the digital economy.

Massive customization. Large-scale standardized production is a major reform of the manufacturing industry, and it has also caused a surplus of standard products today. As people's demand for personalized products increases, mass customization will become one of the main direction of  future development.

Industrial alliance. The continuous deepening of smart manufacturing applications will change the competitive situation in traditional industries, transforming from competition between individuals to competition among different interest groups. The win-win cooperation within a certain range might become a new competitive situation.
